British Literature Eras

What era are you looking forwarding to studying most and why? Are there any particular literary pieces you are hoping we cover? If you're not familiar, puruse the table of contents.  For example, I love all the eras, but I'm particularly fond of the Victorian era because it's the first time women were allowed to publish literature.  This is when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein and the Brownings wrote love poems.

Victorian Era Fun Facts:

-When a woman entered a room, it was considered rude for a man to offer his seat to her because the cushion might still be warm.

-People thought food digested better in the dark, so a dining room located in the basement was considered the best spot in which to eat.

-A glance into a bedroom was considered improper if viewed by a visitor, so bedrooms were located on the second floor.

-People were shy about having water closets, so they disguised fixtures as dressers and cabinets. Tubs were enclosed in wooden boxes that resembled large chests. People went to great lengths to hide toilets from view. In some homes, they were behind a curtain or screen, or even in a room of their own.

-Children rarely saw their parents. A special trip was made to the nursery each evening, and the visit lasted about an hour.

-Women made pictures, wreaths, and bouquets from their own hair or the hair of a family member to be framed and displayed in the parlor.

-Some rocking chairs were designed to disguise a chamber pot. People had to be careful not to rock too quickly!

-A lot of men used macassar oil to slick back their hair. Crocheted doilies, called antimacassars, were put over the backs of chairs to keep this grease from staining the furniture.

-For a lady to show her ankles was considered very risque!

-To control insects, many people kept a HEDGEHOG in the basement. It curled up and slept in the day, but roamed around the dark kitchen at night eating cockroaches and other insects.

I don't know very much about the different eras, so I am not sure which one I am most looking forward too. The Victorian Period and the Medieval Period look interesting.

P.S. I LOVE ENGLISH WITH MRS. SIMMONS!

P.P.S. THIS WEBSITE IS FABULOUS!

I'm looking foreword to the Renaissance Era, just because all the science of the time fascinates me. But since we're probably not reading journals... Then the Victorian Era. I like Victorian Era fiction, although in all these eras, the language is all... strange and they had weird grammar. But anyway, those are the two I'm most looking foreword to.

PS- Its a good thing my internet has a spellchecker, I make a lot of typos.

I don't have one specific era I'm particularly excited about, because I really love history, no matter what sort. I'm excited for all of it!! Although, I am quite excited we're doing the Medieval Era because I'm reading "The Once and Future King", so I'm in that mode.

I am looking forward to the Medevil Era the most. Although the style of writing in this era is hard to understand, I find it to be the most interesting. I am psyched to read Beowolf because I want to see how close the movie portrayed it to the story.

I'm not positive about which era I am looking most forward to, but the Midevil era sounds interesting to me. I also liked the Victorian Era Fun Facts you put up, so I think that will also be a good section. I am not aware of very many pieces from these eras, so there are none that i know of that I want to especially cover.

p.s- 2nd hours is going to be fun and your favorite class!!

After looking at a brief summary of each era, I believe that the Renaissance Era looks the most interesting because of all the new explorations and ideas that erupted. I like learning about the discovery of new places and about the voyages on the way there which was a main interest in this era. Also this is the era of new dreams and inventions spreading throughout Europe. After reading ?Romeo and Juliet? freshman year, (which was my favorite story that year) I am eager to compare it with Shakespeare?s story of Macbeth. Also, this is when Leonardo Da Vinci was painting and I love his work!!!!!!!

There are so many different eras to learn about that it would be hard to choose which one i really want to be taught about. However, this summer i took a trip to Europe which allowed me to see a lot of art pieces created during the Renaissance era and i would be interested to see what inspired the artists to create there works and why.

I am very excited to read about the Medieval Era because I saw a lot of cool pictures of knights with swords while I was browsing through. It looks exciting! I'm also very interested to hear about the Anglo-Saxon Era because it's the oldest. I look forward to hearing about the types of stories people told back in those days.

I'm looking forward to a wonderful year, and I LOVE the brand-new textbooks! They've got that new book smell...mmmmm.

I think I'm most looking forward to the Renaissance Era because of all the new ideas at the time. The Victorian Period looks like it would also be one of my favorites. I'm sure they'll all be great.

I think that the Anglo-Saxon era will be the the most interesting because I don't know anything about this era, but then again, I don't really know anything about any of the other eras.
